RESEARCH, LANGUAGE-LEARNING: Expose your Ear to the Sounds

Dr Sulzberger asserted that, "However crazy it might sound, just listening to the language, even though you don't understand it, is critical".

He continued, "Our ability to learn new words is directly related to how often we have been exposed to the particular combinations of the sounds which make up the words".

Dr Sulzberger's research challenges existing language learning theory. He stated, "Neural tissue required to learn and understand a new language will develop automatically from simple exposure to the language—which is how babies learn their first language," Dr Sulzberger said.

He decided to undertake the research after spending seven years teaching Russian to New Zealand students and observing drop-out patterns.

He said, "When we are trying to learn new foreign words we are faced with sounds for which we may have absolutely no neural representation".

Dr Sulzberger looked for ways people could develop these structures to make the learning process easier. His finding was simple: extensive exposure to the language, something made easier by globalisation and new technology.

"Language is a skill, it's not like learning a fact. If you want to be a weight lifter, you've got to develop the muscle - you can't learn weightlifting from a book. To learn a language you have to grow the appropriate brain tissue, and you do this by lots of listening—songs and movies are great!"

So, if you want to learn English, frequently listening to English podcasts (see our podcast channel: http://podcast.cupofenglish.com/), watching films in their original version, listening to English language radio and music will all radically boost your ability to pick it up.

SPANISH UNIVERSITY TO OFFER CAMBRIDGE ENGLISH TEST

FCE is at the Level B2 of the Common European Frame of Reference (CEFR), an internationally recognized measure of language ability.

The decision is part of the university's ongoing development. The 'Universidad de Carlos III' is the only public Spanish university that has all its courses developed to the new European Higher Education Area (EHEA). It even offers eighteen bilingual degrees.

Here at Cup of English, our advanced level courses are the equivalent to Level B2, and we offer preparation for the First Certificate. Similarly, we offer preparation for the other Cambridge exams that precede the First Certificate: the Preliminary English Test (PET), Level B1 and the Key English Test (KET), Level A2.

LANGUAGES EVOLVE IN A SIMILAR WAY TO HUMANS AND ANIMALS

The study argues that human languages may adapt more like biological organisms than previously thought and that the more common and popular the language, the simpler its construction to facilitate its survival.

Traditional thinking is that languages develop based upon random change and historical drift. For example, English and Turkish are very different languages based upon histories that separate them in space and time. For years, it has been the leading assumption in the linguistic sciences.

However, the researchers have found striking relationships between the demographic properties of a language -- such as its population and global spread -- and the grammatical complexity of those languages.

Languages having the most speakers -- and those that have spread around the world -- were found to have far simpler grammars, specifically morphology, than languages spoken by few people and in circumscribed regions.

For example, languages spoken by more than 100,000 people are almost six times more likely to have simple verb conjugations compared to languages spoken by fewer than 100,000 people.

According to new findings in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, infants born to bilingual mothers (who spoke both languages regularly during pregnancy) exhibit different language preferences than infants born to mothers speaking only one language.
